How to Meditate ON Something?

Meditation is a powerful way for you to clear your mind and to improve your overall wellness and state of being. While you know meditation has its benefits, do you actually know how to do it? How exactly do you meditate on something?

Meditating on something you want involves choosing what you want to meditate on, targeting your focus on something, finding a comfortable spot, getting your entire body to feel relaxed, focusing your attention on a target, calming voice that you have within you, and not being afraid of failing in your meditation.

It is true that meditation comes with plenty of benefits that you would want to take advantage of. Equally, you might not be able to meditate well if you don’t even know how to do it. As such, we have prepared a guide that will help you get to learn how to meditate on something.

How do you meditate on something you want?

When it comes to meditation, there are lots of powerful benefits that come with being able to meditate the right way especially when you know what you want to meditate on.

In that sense, we have a simple step-by-step guide that will help you learn how to meditate on something you want the right way:

1. Know what you want

How to Meditate ON Something?

Before you even start meditating on something you want, you have to make sure that you have clearly established within your mind what you want to meditate on. After all, if you are able to clearly establish the point or the topic of your meditation, it will be easier for you to focus all of your thoughts on it. This is crucial so you can get things started on the right foot.

Not knowing what you want to meditate on will make your mind float through a lot of different thoughts and ideas that can easily disrupt the flow of your meditation.

You may want to meditate on your relationship with a certain person or on your job. Career plans and goals are also something you may want to meditate on. Whatever it is that you want to meditate on, it is something that is deeply personal to you and that it should be something that you should decide yourself.

2. Choose something to focus on

When you are meditating, the entire meditation process involves something that you need to focus your mind on so that it will be easier for you to forget about everything else happening inside your brain while allowing your mind to pinpoint all of its activities towards that one single target you want to focus on.

In most cases, the common target that most meditation experts choose to focus on is their breathing. Focusing on the way you breathe is usually the starting point for most people who are learning how to meditate. As you go along with your meditations and you become rather good at focusing on single points, you can try to focus on other things such as the sounds of the wind or the chirping of the birds.

3. Find a comfortable spot

We cannot stress how important it is for you to find a comfortable spot during your meditation because your body needs to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the meditation process. The more comfortable you are, the easier it will be for you to meditate on something you want as you don’t have to mind whatever your body is feeling at that moment (such as pain, feeling cold, or uncomfortable).

There are many ways for you to feel comfortable while meditating. You can sit on a good chair or a couch while sitting straight, with your feet on the floor and you relax your body. If you prefer sitting on the ground while meditating, make sure you cushion yourself properly by using an exercise mat so that you can feel relaxed throughout the meditation process.

4. Just relax

After you have found your comfortable spot and position, give yourself some time to get settled in before you start meditating. Once you have settled in, try to feel more relaxed by loosening up your body. Don’t try to tense up any part of your body and just let your entire body relax and fall off to the ground while making sure that you are keeping your upright seated position. Just make sure you don’t fall asleep.

5. Focus on the target

Here comes the meditation stage. Now that you have the preparation work completed, it is time to focus on your chosen target. Turn your attention towards your target as you breathe and focus all of your senses on it.

The goal here is to experience what it is like to be in the present, as you focus your mind and your senses on that target. Being able to zero in on it will make you feel more aware of your surroundings as well as your inner being.

6. Calm your inner self

Even if you are quiet on the outside, you still have that inner voice inside your head that may be making a lot of noises. What we mean by that is that your mind might be floating around through all sorts of thoughts and ideas that may be producing distractions inside your head.

In that case, while meditating on something you need to calm your inner voice by allowing your mind to disconnect those other thoughts, as you focus your mind and senses on your target. Do not worry about anything else about your life and just focus on the here and now as you meditate.

7. Accept that you can fail

Meditation is difficult at the beginning and you are bound to fail regardless of whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner. After all, the mind can easily float and think about a lot of different ideas that can disrupt your meditation.

Accept that you can fail and you will be less worried about actually failing while meditating. You don’t have to be a perfectionist about it. Don’t worry when you fail because you can just simply start again.
